The Importance of Routine Eye Exams

Many serious eye conditions develop without symptoms. Without regular exams, issues like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration may go undetected until permanent vision loss occurs.

Our eye clinics across California use advanced diagnostic tools to detect eye diseases early—when they are most treatable.

Routine eye exams provide:

  • Early detection of sight-threatening eye diseases
  • Accurate vision prescriptions for glasses or contact lenses
  • Screenings for systemic issues, like diabetes and high blood pressure
  • Personalized recommendations for vision correction and long-term care

What to Expect During Your Eye Exam

We use state-of-the-art testing and a patient-first approach to evaluate your eyes from every angle.

  1. Detailed Vision Testing: We assess your clarity of vision and determine if you need glasses or contact lenses
  2. Eye Health Screening: Advanced imaging and diagnostic tests help detect early signs of glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye conditions
  3. Personalized Treatment Plan: If we identify concerns, we will walk you through your options and recommend a care plan tailored to your needs

Our eye doctors take the time to explain your results in clear, understandable terms, empowering you to make informed decisions about your eye health.

Eye Exams for Every Age

Adult Exams (Ages 18–64)

At this age, routine eye exams help detect early signs of eye conditions before they affect your vision. We assess:

  • Digital eye strain and dry eye symptoms
  • Vision changes that require glasses or contact lenses
  • Early detection of conditions like glaucoma or cataracts

We recommend exams every 1 to 2 years for adults or more frequently if you have risk factors such as diabetes or a family history of eye disease.

Senior Exams (65+)

Aging brings increased risk for certain eye conditions. Our exams for seniors focus on:

  • Cataract detection and monitoring
  • Screening for macular degeneration and glaucoma
  • Diabetic eye care and retinal health assessments

Pediatric Exams (Ages 0–17)

Vision plays a critical role in childhood development and learning. Early detection of conditions like nearsightedness (myopia), lazy eye (amblyopia), and crossed eyes (strabismus) can prevent long-term vision problems.

We follow the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s (AAO) guidelines, recommending the first eye exam by age one, with regular screenings throughout childhood. Pediatric eye exams are offered at our El Centro eye clinic.

Beyond the Exam: Treatment & Specialty Care

Many patients come in for an eye exam and discover opportunities for improved vision and long-term eye health. A comprehensive eye exam is often the first step in identifying conditions that require specialized treatment, including:

  • Cataract Surgery with Premium IOLs: Our specialists offer advanced intraocular lenses (IOLs) to restore sharp vision if cataracts are detected
  • Dry Eye Diagnosis and Treatment: We offer LipiFlow®, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, and prescription treatments to restore tear function and improve comfort
  • Glaucoma and Retinal Disease Management: Our team closely monitors eye pressure, optic nerve health, and retinal function to detect glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration
  • Corneal Disorders and Oculoplastics: We diagnose and manage keratoconus, corneal dystrophies, and pterygium, and provide eyelid surgery and functional procedures to improve eye health and vision

Our commitment extends beyond diagnosis at American Eye Associates. We provide personalized, cutting-edge treatments to protect and preserve your vision, ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients.
